The
New Pirates of the Caribbean
Not the movie...the ride!

Ah, the
irascible Captain Jack...

After the release and success of Pirates
of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl,
one of the most logged comments Disneyland got from visitors
was confusion that Johnny Depp wasn't in the ride.
When
the Imagineers announced they would integrate new figures
into Pirates of the Caribbean, some purists were
outraged. But really, this isn't worse than having pirates
chase food instead of wenches, a change incurred during
the great Pirates of the Politically Correct Wars of the
'90s.
Last
weekend, the changes went into effect, coinciding with the
world premiere of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's
Chest, also held at the Anaheim theme park. And no,
unlike with Magic Mountain's Tatsu
opening, Fanboy Planet was not there. Come on, what's a
geek got to do to get some Disney love?
Disneyland
has released photos to the media, and thanks to Jim
Hill Media, we can sort of pretend we were there. (Yes,
a few days later we did catch a screening of the film, and
it rocks, but we can't get into specifics just yet.)
We've
got a link to the site's full article with a lot more photos,
but here are a few that will probably get you excited about
heading down to Disneyland and reliving the Caribbean experience.
In addition to Captain Jack Sparrow and Captain Barbossa
figures, it sounds like Disney has integrated Davy Jones,
the main villain of Dead Man's Chest and likely
At World's End, into the ride as well. The effect
sounds rather unphotographable, which means I've got to
get down to Anaheim this summer.
Or perhaps
I should wait, as next year the ride is rumored to be getting
Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightly)
figures as well. That's going to be expensive, what with
the nightly applications of angel dust.
