Episode 11: Elfquest Adventure Game
and Core Worlds Digital!

July 29th, 2014

Two Intriguing Games for the Fanboy Comic Loving Gamer this Week

Welcome back to Fanboy on Kickstarter, the column that tries to clue you into the can't-miss fanboy fantastic opportunities in the world of crowd sourcing. I only publish when I can find products that meet two simple criteria 1) I've actually invested in the project and 2) I think it's a unique, valuable, and inexpensive project for Fanboys to similarly fund. For more information, check out the archive!

Before we get into this week's Kickstarter recommendations, a reminder about the Batkid Begins documentary now seeking funding on IndieGogo. If you haven't read Derek McCaw's article on the project, here's a quick link to that. It's a really worthy project, so consider giving to Batkid Begins.

Now, let's get into this week's recommendations with a Wolfrider surprise.

Elfquest Adventure Game

Funding Ends August 12, 2014

The original Elfquest comic back in the '80's had a role playing game and several board games brought to comic fans by West End Games. Wendy and Richard Pini have brought Elfquest back to comics and it's only appropriate that we get a new game too! The Official Elfquest Adventure Game is a cooperative card game for 1-4 players. In cooperative games, everyone either wins or loses together against situations the game throws at the players.

Nearly two years in development by Cheeky Dingo Entertainment, The Official Elfquest Adventure Game is now looking for Kickstarter support..

Card play brings seven of the main Elfquest characters out to team up and accomplish feats, face dangers, and basically quest about. Let's listen to Layman Kingsford explain more.

This is a starter set, and the hope is that they'll eventually bring you all the characters from the original series as supplements. But for the moment, this is a basic game that plays 1-4; yes, that means solitaire play is supported.

OK, now we've got a sense of the game. Let's look at the stats, because that's what we do here!

  Official Elfquest Adventure Game
Summary
Cooperative questing in the Elfquest world for 1-4 players. A card game where you combine resources from characters to overcome obstacles in your way.

Core Worlds Digital!

Funding Ends August 6, 2014

The original paper card game Core Worlds came out in 2011 and has a very high 7.33 rating on Boardgame Geek. This digital version will make this popular science fiction card game that much more portable and provide you with lots of variations on play.

A deck-building game where you take on one of the several uniquely powered Barbarian Kingdoms, slowly growing in power until you challenge and defeat some number of core worlds in the ancient Galactic Realm, there's plenty of science fiction them packed into a few decks of cards.

Let's listen to BrokenMyth Studios pitch the product.

Make no mistake: this is a game of combat, world crushing, screaming jets and ground-pounding troops. Of course, that's what's going on when you're building a killer deck and capturing increasingly more difficult planets to add their diversity to your power.

The art in the paper version is beautiful and is being reused for this digital version.

So let's learn more about the project itself.

Name
  Core Worlds Digital
Summary
Deck-building strategy war game with multiple unique factions for players to play, Core Worlds Digital will be initially released on the iOS platform for both iPhone and iPad, with an Android version available shortly afterwards.
Sweet Spot Donor Level

For $10 you fund at Frontier Pioneer, receiving the digital game upon release and six digital alternative hero cards only available through the Kickstarter project. Higher levels can include the original physical paper card game and expansions.

Funding Status
They've just crossed-over the $20,000 goal they'd set and have time to increase that a bit more before the project ends.
Background
Founded in early 2007, BrokenMyth Studios is a 3D Digital Media & Game Development company. They are gamers and come from diverse backgrounds, each with our own unique talents and interests. In addition to creating assets for games and developing original I.P. they use our expertise to provide innovative solutions to businesses.
This is their first Kickstarter project

I'm personally looking forward to this version as I hope practicing on my iPad will help me eventually beat Shang Chi at the paper game.

That's it for this episode. Again, send us your feedback and your own Kickstarter picks via the Fanboy Planet Facebook page!

Note: For simplicity's sake, these articles typically refer to delivery conditions and pricing within the US. Most Kickstarter projects handle world-wide delivery, which you can review on the individual project pages.
