Evil
Dead: Regeneration Preview
|
As
opposed to the movie, which we'll be waiting for
for a looong time...
|
Note:
For the record, no, we did not play the entire game, nor even
much beyond two or three levels. THQ had set up several screens
at their reception for the
game, but it would be a wasted opportunity to just play
a videogame while Bruce Campbell was there and headless musicians
offered good rocking. Remember, kids: have a life.
However,
Erin did play for quite a while on both PS2 and Xbox. I
played, too, and got much farther along than on the generally
poorly designed PSOne game Hail to the King. THQ has got
a good one here.
So the
new Evil Dead: Regeneration game seems pretty interesting.
I've seen a couple of the Evil Dead movies, and
I've been a Bruce Campbell fan for awhile, but still, I
didn't really know what to expect, other than witty commentary
from Brisco County Jr./Ash himself.
What
I did find was a fun uncomplicated game that still manages
to capture the horror aspect of the original movies, without
losing the humor and campiness.

So
heroic yet so cartoony...
|
It's
an easy game to pick up, and actually quite a bit of fun
to play. I managed to kill a few zombies without too much
trouble, and enjoyed every minute of it. There is a bit
of a trick to the controls (I'd switch the jump button and
the firing button, personally), but once you get used to
the placement, fighting zombies is easy, and I happily slaughtered
my fair share of them, spreading a nice amount of gore over
the various walls.
The
graphics have enough realism to them to keep the blood,
body parts, and gore in generally very... well... gory.
But there's a comical style to the animation that helps
lighten the horror mood, and generate some laughs. I personally
enjoyed every close up of Ash's face in the game, just to
see what campy horror looks he was going to give us next.
Overall,
for the brief period I test played Evil Dead: Regeneration,
I found it to be enjoyable, simple, horrific fun. And having
Bruce Campbell wandering around behind me while I played
just added to the general enjoyment.
