Justice
League Unlimited
To Another Shore
Original Airdate - 09/24/05
In memory of
Bob Denver, Justice League Unlimited begins this
with a tiny ship being washed ashore by a great storm. Rather
than coconuts and bamboo huts, the crew of the ship find
an ancient Viking ship entombed in ice.
Later,
at the Watchtower, Wonder Woman readies herself for an international
"Save the Earth" conference. She is representing Themyscira
at the behest of her Mother and she has asked that J'onn
come along for company. J'onn declines and they get into
a discussion about why J'onn dislikes humanity and how lonely
that must be for him. Haven't we all been there before?
Elsewhere, the
Legion of Doom is having a Board Meeting of Doom. After
reading the Agenda of Doom, Lex proudly discusses his brilliance
in upgrading and augmenting the powers of several Doom members
including Atomic Skull and "Devil Ray" (coughBlackMantacough).
Gorilla Grodd
can't stand to not hear the sound of his voice any longer
so he tells the allegedly well known tale of Prince Jon.
The Viking Prince fell in love with a beautiful Valkyrie.
When Odin, King of the North Skies found out, he banished
Prince Jon from Valhalla.
After years
of begging, Odin finally agreed to let Prince Jon back into
Valhalla and marry his true love if Jon suffered a heroic
death on the mortal plane. Jon agreed, but Odin got the
last laugh after cursing Jon with invulnerability. After
years of trying to be killed in battle, Prince Jon sailed
off into the sunset and beyond the knowledge of mankind.
Then I guess
he died because Gorilla Grodd is convinced that it's Prince
Jon's Viking ship that has been recently discovered. Convinced
that Prince Jon's corpse holds the secret to immortality,
Grodd dispatches the Legion to recover it.
How can a corpse
hold the secret to immortality? Stupid ape.
From
the core of the Earth to another shore the Justice
League changes gears for episode #2 this week. Rather than
a fantasy tale, this episode is pure action. J'onn and Green
Arrow get in some nice screen time, but the letdown of not
seeing Mr. Terrific in action was disappointing.
All the action
left little time for any real depth other than J'onn's subplot.
Although I didn't see the ending coming, I have to believe
they are only setting up something bigger with that move.
The
back story of Prince Jon was nicely done with some wonderful
art pieces. I didn't notice in the credits who did the art
but if anyone out there knows, please write me. My living
room is suddenly incomplete without a giant pirate Odin
mural
The character
I liked most this week was King Faraday. He came across
as Indiana Jones in a suit while still having time to chew
bubble gum and kick some butt.
Calling
Black Manta "Death Ray" stuck out like a sore thumb this
week. Are they planning a Black Manta movie that I'm not
aware of that might have caused character licensing problems?
He's an original LOD member and, while otherwise lame, he
did kill Aquaman's infant son. That's just cold.
