Justice
League Unlimited
Shadow of the Hawk
Original Airdate - 09/17/05
We jump
in with Batman, Vixen, Green Lantern and Hawkgirl defeating
a team of villains known in the DCU as The Extremists. Following
the battle, a stranger approaches Shayera and introduces
himself as Carter Hall. He's an archaeologist who recently
discovered an ancient Thanagarian weapon while in Egypt
and wants Shayera's input (ahem) on the item. He also asks
her out to dinner, to which she agrees much to the dismay
of Batman and Green Lantern. Vixen could care less, though
her claws grip Green Lantern particularly fiercely.
Even though Carter asked Hawkgirl to help,
Batman gets left holding the shaft (literally) while Hawkgirl
slips a skimpy dress over her wings and heads out for a
night on the town. On her way out, Batman lets her know
that Carter Hall's real name is Joseph Gardner and he was
a curator at the Midway City museum right up until he went
insane and started telling people that aliens landed in
ancient Egypt. Batman also shows her old Justice League
Unlimited episodes and is able to point Carter out in
numerous crowd shots.
Shayera
gives Batman a big can of shut the hell up and heads off
for dinner in Metropolis and breakfast in Egypt with Carter.
Green Lantern cries on Batman's shoulder about his jealousy.
He knows in his heart that he's supposed to end up with
Hawkgirl because he has met
his future son whose mother was Hawkgirl. Batman puts
him in his place with the line of the season thus far, "if
you actually believe that, why are you still banging Vixen?"
In retrospect, he might have not used those
words, but that's what I heard.
Later,
in Egypt, Hawkgirl and Carter spend the morning after searching
through an ancient tomb. Rather than candy or flowers, Carter
surprises Shayera with the news that he and Shayera are
actually the millennia old reincarnations of two Thanagarian
lovers/law enforcers who helped ancient Egyptians build
their society before they were eventually murdered. That
plot has so been done to death, but I'm keeping that line
in my pocket anyway.
Carter reveals that he's also known as
Hawkman and that he's even made his own Hawkman costume.
After showing her his spaceship but before Hawkgirl can
blow her rape whistle they are attacked by the Shadow Thief
who has followed them into the tomb in order to steal the
buried Egyptian treasure.
Justice
League Unlimited is so good now that it's almost pointless
to keep reviewing them. In fact, I think I've said that
before so I'm now repeating myself. (But you're not
getting out of reviewing them -- editor)
Bruce
Timm and team finally bring fan favorite Hawkman into continuity,
which fans have wanted since Hawkgirl was first announced
as a Justice League cast member. The writing team
remains faithful to current DC continuity. Hawkman fans
have nothing to be unhappy about here.
Shadow
Thief fans on the other hand are probably pissed off about
the whole episode, but who gives a crap about those two
guys anyway?
Another
solid episode under the belt of Bruce Timm and Co. that
can only lead to better stories in the future now that Hawkman
is around to add to the awesome factor.
Next Week on Justice League Unlimited
Chaos at the Earth's Core: Green Lantern leads Stargirl,
S.T.R.I.P.E. and Supergirl to Skartaris, a fanastic world
where they meet a new hero, The Warlord.
