Dimension Films
recut, redubbed, and repackaged a few of Jackie Chan's lesser films
after his first big stateside success with Rumble in the Bronx
and now, with Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and others making
mystical Kung-Fu pictures all the rage, Dimension follows the same
game plan, this time through the home video arm of Buena Vista.
The Legend
of Fong Sai Yuk 2 becomes the much hipper sounding The Legend
2 with a trimmer running time and a new title sequence. Although
the purists will disagree, this is not altogether a bad thing. The
only real misrepresentative thing about the DVD is a cover which shows
Jet Li as he appears in modern day dress, instead of the period look
he sports in the film.
Li returns to
the role of Fong Sai Yuk with raw star power and an obvious joy for
the role. This time Fong Sai Yuk's adventures involve two girls, his
mom, an imperial secret and, as always, a lot of crazy Kung-Fu action.
For those of
you familiar with the Fong Sai Yuk films, this reissue is not
for you. Hunt down the Hong Kong subtitled original cuts and settle
down for a fine Fong Sai Yuk double feature. For those of you
who haven't visited the genre between Enter The Dragon and
Crouching Tiger,, this release and The Legend are great
places to jump back aboard.
You can catch
up real quick with part 2 without seeing part 1, but I recommend picking
up both films. The dubbing is well done and the transfer is clean.
Other than that there's not much to say about the DVD itself, because
it has no extras except a few trailers for other films and English
subtitles for the hearing impaired. Overall this release isn't worth
much more than a rental -- but a really enjoyable rental at that.
