Buffy
The Vampire Slayer
Lies My
Parents Told Me
original airdate: 03/25/03
Previously
on Buffy:
Andrew made a documentary about The Slayer. Students at Sunnydale
went crazy (many in very familiar ways). Buffy searched for
a way to close the Hellmouth seal while sexual tension between
Spike and Principal Wood grew.
Ten
Second Recap:
Giles distracts Buffy while Principal Wood gets his revenge
on Spike. The mystery behind Spike's musical trigger is revealed
and man, what a Momma's boy. Willow goes off to guest star
in an Angel
episode. Everyone else hangs out at the craft services
truck.
I have
a secret confession that I usually keep hidden from other
Buffy fans I know (my wife).
I want
Spike to die.
After
all that happened between he and Buffy last season and his
transgression back into evil this season, I see no reason
to have him make it to the end of the series alive. Yes, he
has his soul back, but big whooptie doo.
Spike
isn't so much fighting for good because he wants to as he
is because he believes that is the way to win Buffy's love.
Unlike Angel, Spike isn't seeking redemption for his previous
evil ways, he's just out to nail the hot blonde girl.
For that
I can't fault him, but after Buffy is done using him as a
warrior in the fight against evil, she needs to kill him once
and for all. The Slayer's life is ultimately a lonely one,
as we've been reminded time and time again this season. Eventually
she will not be a part of Spike's life and without his obedience
chip I doubt it is in Spike's nature to fight for the forces
of good.
Only
a few more months before we see if the writers agree with
me (and my money is on the fact that they don't).
This
week also illustrated another change in Buffy's character
over the course of seasons. Realizing that she is the Slayer
and ultimately responsible for saving the world, Buffy must
maintain a certain emotional distance from everyone around
her. Buffy admits that she must be willing to make sacrifices,
including her friends and family.
I smell
the opportunity for Dark Horse comics to do an Elseworlds
tale where Buffy lets Dawn be sacrificed to seal the rift
that Glory opened.
With
only a handful of episodes of Buffy left before the show ends,
I'm curious as to where Buffy's character will end up and
what her fate will be. Over the last seven seasons we've seen
Buffy as a bubble gum chewing high school student, self-obsessed
college girl, Mother figure, brooding Slayer ripped from Heaven,
"I'm in an unhealthy relationship so I can feel something"…
person and finally seasoned war general.
Line
of the Week:
Andrew: "Willow, call for you from L.A. Somebody named Fred.
Guy sounds a kinda effeminate."
