Frank Miller Doc Gets Theatrical Premiere

Granted, it has been available for a few months as an extra on a Warner Brothers DVD, but many might have missed it. I know I did.
Because that DVD is The Dark Knight Returns -- the Deluxe Edition, one disc combining an animated movie that had been previously released in two parts. So even the most hardcore fan could be forgiven for not picking that up -- because they probably already had both parts.
It seems they snuck in an in-depth, 75 minute documentary on Frank Miller's creative process for The Dark Knight Returns called Masterpiece: Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns.
Okay, sounds reasonable.
At this writing, the documentary is getting its theatrical premiere at Cinequest as part of the "Writer's Celebration," an all-day event on Sunday, March 9th, which will include the Maverick Spirit Award to Neil Gaiman. Currently, it's on the schedule for 11 a.m. at the San Jose Repertory Theatre, 101 Paseo de San Antonion in downtown San Jose.
Also as of this writing, it appears that Frank will be too wrapped up in shooting Sin City 2 to attend. But as excuses go, that's a pretty good one. Once again, Fanboy Planet provided the bio for Cinequest:
“You told me that I break too many of the important rules…”
Like a kick in the teeth to the old style of comics, Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns exploded into readers’ consciousnesses in 1986. Suddenly four-color comics weren’t so black and white, gathered up in Batman’s grey-gloved fist. After the first issue, Miller went from popular to legendary. Masterpiece explores how Miller shook the dust off Batman and sent ripples through the industry that are still felt today. Narrated by Malcolm McDowell (A Clockwork Orange), the documentary traces Miller’s process from the glimmer of an idea to one of the most famous graphic novels of all time. Miller’s dark vision left the rest of the comics industry struggling to catch up. Dive deep into Miller’s masterpiece, still one of the most influential graphic novels of our time. |
Tickets will be available here. Should sales warrant, the event may be moved to the California Theater.
