Chew Revived As Animated Project -- Directly To You
 The Hollywood Reporter officially broke the news that John Layman and Rob Guillory's Chew is being developed as an animated project with voicework from The Walking Dead's Steven Yeun and The Guild's Felicia Day.
Scripted by Layman himself, the animated project is being directed by Jeff Krelitz, also credited with animated projects Torchwood: Web of Lies and Peter Panzerfaust, another hit series from Image Comics.
For those who don't know of it, Chew is the critically acclaimed Image series about detective Tony Chu, at first an FDA enforcer who is a "cibopath;" he can psychically determine the past of anything he eats. His love interest, being voiced by Day, is Amelia Mintz, a "saboscrivener" who can write about food so descriptively that readers can taste it.
Yes, Layman made up those terms.
The series has won two Eisners and two Harveys, as well as having individual volumes top the New York Times bestseller list. Layman recently stepped back from DC writing duties in order to concentrate on bringing the series to a satisfying conclusion.
Layman and Guillory will be executive producing alongside Scott Boxenbaum and Dan Tischler. Right now, the plan is to go for digital download and home video directly. Boxenbaum and Krelitz are producing this under the banner of Heavy Metal, marking this as their first animated project.
Previously, Chew had been in development as a live-action series for Showtime, with Yeun one of the actors being looked at for Chu. That collapsed last year, but Layman promised fans that it wasn't the end.
Not only isn't it the end, it could be a new beginning for independent comics adaptations.
