Zack Snyder's Superman Found His Mother:
Diane Lane to play Martha Kent
"Oh, but that boy can juggle cows..."

According to an announcement from Warner Brothers this evening, Diane Lane will be taking over the farm in Smallville.

In the announcement, director Zack Snyder enthused, “This was a very important piece of casting for me because Martha Kent is the woman whose values helped shape the man we know as Superman. We are thrilled to have Diane in the role because she can convey the wisdom and the wonder of a woman whose son has powers beyond her imagination.”

While it is true that Lane looks like someone who would take no guff from her Kryptonian supertot, it's a little jarring for those of us who grew up alongside her from A Little Romance to The Outsiders, etc. It's one thing to realize that you're older than Superman; it's another to realize you might be older than his mom.

Thanks, Zack Snyder.

But seriously, it's an interesting choice, and if the rumored signing of Kevin Costner as Jonathan Kent comes to fruition, that's really a power pairing to become the formative figures in Clark Kent's life.

Clark/Superman, of course, will be played by Henry Cavill, and rumors have also popped up that Snyder has been looking to Viggo Mortenson to play General Zod.

Production starts soon on this Christopher Nolan-produced Superman (heck, we're not even sure if that's the actual title yet), which is slated to be released in the Summer of 2012. Snyder directs from a script by David S. Goyer. Right now we have a clear sense of style and interesting casting. If the script holds up its end of the bargain, we could be in for a good film.

Like father, like son?
