Star Trek Into Darkness Rises...
Paramount has released the first official poster for Star Trek Into Darkness and made it clear it's about Benedict Cumberbatch. But let's face it -- all genre projects for the next three years will be about Benedict Cumberbatch if they want to be successful. You just know he's going to sneak into Doctor Who somehow...
But I'll also go ahead and say this lends credence to the "he's Gary Mitchell" rumor. Or at least, he's a character like Gary Mitchell -- a reasonably good guy suddenly gifted with abilities far beyond what humans are meant to know, and it turns him. Maybe someone in the Federation -- maybe even Kirk -- overreacts and causes "Mitchell" to wreak havoc on a peaceful colony. Maybe he loses his Sally Kellerman figure.
Or maybe, he just wants to watch the world burn.
At any rate, though I don't like the idea of revisiting old Star Trek continuity (and despite all the speculation, I think that's probably fan overreaction there, too), J. J. Abrams can do a lot more now with the concept than Gene Roddenberry could back in 1966.
