Spider-Man
3 Gets a New Love...
|
Face it,
Tiger, you just hit the ...wrong character...
|
Only
in Hollywood would it work this way. Take a cute blonde
woman and cast her as an iconic redhead from comics, then
make her Peter Parker's first love. It's the movies; they
really don't have to follow comics continuity slavisly,
nor should they. Younger readers would also have agreed
that Mary Jane Watson was Spider-Man's girlfriend. End of
story.
Then
come the sequels.
Each
one gets bigger and weightier and once you've gotten past
the conflict of will Peter and Mary Jane really get together,
you've got to throw a new wedge in: another love interest
to spice things up. We love triangles.
Go back
to the comics and look for other characters and voila!
Gwen Stacy.
Who
should we cast? A redhead to play an iconic blonde...is
it too late for the actresses to switch places? Kirsten
Dunst has always seemed uncomfortable as the bombshell,
though of course the films have toned that aspect of her
character down. Yet there's something sweet and innocent
about her that would be far more fitting for Gwen.
But
look at Bryce Dallas Howard, confirmed by the Hollywood
Reporter as playing Gwen Stacy in Spider-Man 3,
about to start principal photography next month. Holy crap.
THAT'S Mary Jane Watson!
Plot-wise,
this could all work fine. Brian Michael Bendis pulled off
the switcharoo in Ultimate Spider-Man, introducing Gwen
Stacy in a way that surprised, satisfied and then (because
of her fate) horrified fans. Even the Hollywood Reporter
acknowledged that the first Spider-Man film already
used the most dramatic aspect of the Gwen Stacy storyline
for Mary Jane. Sam Raimi has been very cagy about Spider-Man
3's plot, and this development changes a lot of fan assumption
that the romantic triangle would be among Kirsten Dunst,
Tobey Maguire and Topher Grace.
We'll
see. Bryce Dallas Howard is an excellent actress.

Will she
date Flash Thompson? Will they remember
Flash?
