Jada Pinkett Smith Swims Into Gotham
|
Not who I pictured as Fish Mooney..

Well played, Bruno Heller and Danny Cannon. Those men are steering Gotham into being, and this morning Warner Brothers released a casting notice that both plays against expectations and makes great sense.
Last week, when they released character description of Oswald Cobblepot, they described him as a low-level psychopath in the service of gangster Fish Mooney. Call me old-fashioned, stodgy, or outright stupid, but with that character name, I got the image of an old-school gangster, like something out of Batman: The Long Halloween.
Okay, I'll be honest. I immediately thought of Abe Vigoda.
They sure as heck didn't cast Abe Vigoda.
Instead, Jada Pinkett Smith (The Matrix, HawthoRNe, Collateral) has taken the role, described as "a sadistic gangster boss and nightclub owner, Fish Mooney's got the street smarts and almost extra-sensory abilities to read people like an open book." So comics fans can see how Cobblepot can rise to being The Penguin we all know, but more importantly as to why Pinkett Smith makes sense, "...imposing and hotheaded, she's not one to be crossed."
Let's face it -- Will Smith knows she is not to be crossed. If she can keep his ego in check, she can easily terrorize Gotham City.
