After a
few days of rumors, Warner Brothers has issued a press release
confirming that Heath Ledger will be The Joker in Director
Christopher Nolan's second Batman film. To no one's surprise,
either, Christian Bale will return as Bruce Wayne/Batman.
Producer
Jeff Robinov also announced the title of the film, The
Dark Knight, which begins production in early 2007.
“Chris’
unique vision is what made Batman
Begins such an outstanding film and we could not
imagine anyone else at the helm of The Dark Knight,”
said Robinov. “We also can’t wait to see two
such formidable actors as Christian and Heath face off with
each other as Batman and The Joker.”
“I'm
excited to continue the story we started with Batman
Begins,” added Nolan. “Our challenge in
casting The Joker was to find an actor who is not just extraordinarily
talented but fearless. Watching Heath Ledger's interpretation
of this iconic character taking on Christian Bale’s
Batman is going to be incredible.”
To echo
Nolan's comments, take a look at Ledger's body of work.
You will see a surprisingly versatile actor that may have
exactly what it takes to portray the insane clown.
The
major casting issues left unresolved are in the still rumored
roles of Harvey Dent and whichever love interest Nolan chooses
to pursue. For the role of Dent, Ryan Phillipe has been
touted this week. If internet speculation is true, it's
crucial for the franchise, as it sets up Dent to become
Two-Face in the likely event of a third film.
As for
the title, that's a bold move by Nolan and Warner Brothers,
and welcome rather than finding some way to number the franchise.
If it stays intact, the title ensures that the phrase "The
Dark Knight" enters the public consciousness -- beyond
the awareness of comic book fans.
Why
would that matter? Because then you can easily do something
like The Dark Knight Returns years from now.
