Today The Hollywood Reporter confirms something leaked to
us yesterday: Miramax has picked up the distribution rights
to Creative
Light Entertainment's Comic
Book: The Movie.
Directed by Mark Hamill, Comic Book: The Movie is a "documentary unencumbered by facts" that was largely shot at the San Diego Comic-Con last summer. Hamill stars as a high school teacher/comic book historian brought to the convention as technical advisor for a film version of his favorite golden age book. As many of us can identify with, he risks increasing disillusionment as he discovers just what the studio wants to do to "his" character.
Also in the cast are such talented voice-over actors as
Billy West (Futurama, Ren & Stimpy), Jess Harnell (Animaniacs,
rare on-screen appearance in The Country Bears), and
the amazing Tom
Kenny (Spongebob Squarepants).
Originally scheduled for direct-to-video release this summer, the new Miramax deal delays the film's release until early fall, and opens the door for the possibility (not confirmed) of a theatrical release.
Creative Light has also picked up the independent mockumentary Superguy, which covers the trials and tribulations of a "superman" stuck in the real world, obeying laws of physics and enduring lawsuits. Though it is not clear if they'll include that on the Comic Book: The Movie DVD, Superguy himself does make a cameo in Hamill's film.
