And The New Daredevil Is... Charlie Cox
Rumors cropped up last night that Marvel had been lookiing at actor Charlie Cox to play Daredevil in the upcoming Netflix all-at-once series Daredevil. Well, sometimes these things happen, and then they actually happen.
Today Marvel Studios did confirm that Cox (Stardust, Boardwalk Empire) will indeed play Matt Murdock, though whether it not it means a dye job remains to be seen.
This moment of stability in the hotly anticipated first project with Netflix was badly needed, as last Friday the originally announced showrunner, Drew Goddard, stepped back from the project. However, he was replaced almost immediately by Steven S. DeKnight, who had worked with Goddard on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel so things look good.
Most likely Goddard had to cut back on his Daredevil duties because Sony had also hired him to create The Sinister Six for their attempted Spiderverse films. In Marvel's press release confirming Cox, the studio still credited Goddard with writing the first two episodes before excusing himself to being executive producer.
The studio also described Daredevil the series in a pretty straightforward, reassuring manner (for fans):
Blinded as a young boy but imbued with extraordinary senses, Matt Murdock fights against injustice by day as a lawyer, and by night as the super hero Daredevil in modern day Hell’s Kitchen, New York City. |
No real surprises there -- and that's kind of a nice surprise. Now to hear about the next Marvel/Netflix series, because you know that when Daredevil drops that's pretty much just going to take us two days tops...
