Agent Carter To Debut At Comic-Con
Once again, Marvel Studios does it right -- not by giving us what we want, but by giving us what we didn't know we wanted.
Actress Hayley Atwell made a strong impression in Captain America: The First Avenger, but of course part of the tragedy of Cap's story is that he loses her thanks to his deep sleep in the ice. (Am I right, Lon? We can both admit it -- we still tear up at that perfect, perfect last line in Cap's movie.)
But Kevin Feige and his genius brain trust realize that along with Captain America comes 70 years of Marvel Movie Universe history to play around with -- and Peggy Carter was just too strong a character to let alone, as she had to have been a crucial building block of SHIELD.
So next week at Comic-Con, probably during the Marvel Movie panel at 6 on Saturday in Hall H, Marvel will debut the 15-minute short film Agent Carter. Set roughly a year after Cap went into the ice, the short focuses on Agent Carter's work with a prototype organization called the SSR.
They'll be in pursuit of something called "The Zodiac." While Marvel has had many definitions for that menace -- both a specific villain and an organization of villains -- there is also a "Zodiac Key," so in this short amount of time, that could what Peggy is after.
Atwell will be joined by Dominic Cooper as Howard Stark and Bradley Cooper stepping off the set of Saving Mr. Banks as Carter's sexist boss Agent Flynn. Marvel promises cameos from other corners of their universe -- and as we've been speculating on the podcast, might they need to do something to shore up the existence of Jim Hammond, the original Human Torch, who appeared at the first Stark Expo in 1942? If they're going to move forward with the Vision as is rumored, why not go whole hog and lay it out right? Okay, that's just fanboy nonsense, but that's what we do here.
What if you're not one of those lucky enough to be in Hall H? Well, I have no doubt it will be leaked on line, but it's really meant for the September 24 Blu-ray release of Iron Man 3, as if we needed another reason to buy it.
But okay. I'll play along. Give me those extras -- really cement that movie universe and again, Warner Brothers? I don't think anybody would blame you if you would just out and out copy from Marvel's playbook because dammit -- THEY'RE DOING IT RIGHT AGAIN AND AGAIN!
