A Mysterious
Blast From The Past?
I'd
like to have run a full-blown letters column this week, but
only one person wrote in.
However,
that one person did send us a little treat that's worth repeating,
if only for the change of pace.
I was
at a tag sale last weekend and found an old 45 record of a
Commander Courage radio show. The copyright date is 1953.
I ripped it to .mp3 and thought you might want it for your
website.
Take care,
Brian Murphy
Download
the .mp3 here.
Thanks
so much, Brian. I listened to it, and it's cool, but I admit
that I don't know as much about the character as I would like.
Once we venture out of Golden Age characters not owned by
DC, I flounder a bit. Heck, a lot. I'm no Donald Swan, nor
even a Roy Thomas.
What
little I know about Commander Courage comes from having glanced
at the Peter David penned series a few years back. Budget
issues kept me from really paying much attention, and though
I know that Donald Swan's fanzine Once Upon A Dime ran some
in-depth articles, I don't remember as much as I should.
Anyway,
I did a websearch and got this image of Commander Courage,
just so you can put a face with the character in the recording.
Though Brian says the copyright is 1953, this episode, detailing
Commander Courage's origin, sounds like its from the early
'40's.
Does
anybody know anything else about it? Like who ran it, who
might have other episodes, and just who the heck was in it?
I'm not sure, but it sounds like the great Sterling Holloway
was involved.
Write
in and let me know. Heck, if Donald Swan is reading this (and
from our conversation in San Diego, he at least claims to
be a Fanboy reader), maybe he could write in and let us know
just what's up with this recording.
