If You Can't Go To San Diego...
Even in a town of insiders, there are people who aren't going to Comic-Con. Maybe they tried, but couldn't get a ticket. Maybe they would rather spend that weekend exploring Los Angeles as if they were The Omega Man, searching for survivors along the empty but shiny highways.*
Or maybe they know something we don't.
Whatever the reason, not going to Comic-Con does not mean not celebrating the Popular Arts, as they say. Because our beloved Earth-2 Comics has an alternative.
Begun last year, the Sherman Oaks store (and full disclosure -- Friend of Fanboy Planet) hosted events every day of Comic-Con, further cementing my own theory that a great comics shop isn't just where you go to buy comics; it's where you go to be part of a community.
Though they have not officially released their schedule, (which last year featured costume contests, treats, and guest artists all in a family friendly atmosphere), the store has officially posted that yes, Non-Con 2014 is happening, and registration will open on July 16.
And of course, Non-Con 2014 will begin with BATMAN DAY! Wednesday, July 23, has been determined by DC Comics to be the 75th Anniversary of Batman (and the unknown anniversary of a Fanboy Planet Editor-in-Chief as well as Daniel Radcliffe).
To celebrate, both Earth-2 Comics shops -- Sherman Oaks and Northridge -- will be offering commemorative copies of Detective Comics #27, the first appearance of the Dark Knight. Both stores promise additional surprises, and the Sherman Oaks shop will have a gallery of every issue of Batman and Detective Comics from 1964 to 1989, as well as many other classic issues. That gallery, by the way, is for sale.
There will also be a limited supply of special commemorative Batman masks, so celebrate early!
For more information, that's Earth-2 Comics, 15017 Ventura Boulevard in Sherman Oaks, California, and Earth-2 Comics Northridge, 8967 Reseda Blvd. in Northridge, California.
