Comic-Con
2004:
Michael Chabon's Keynote Address At The Eisners
It's
not often that Comic-Con gets a Pulitzer Prize winner in
its midst, though perhaps as comics become more and more
mainstream, there will be more than one such of the stature
of Michael Chabon.
After
winning said prize for writing a love letter to comics (and
life) in The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay,
Chabon continued his day job as respected novelist. But
by night, he became a creator of comic books, first contributing
a Mr. Terrific story to DC's JSA: All-Stars series
last year, then by adapting and orchestrating others adaptations
of The Escapist, Kavalier and Clay's creation, to his own
Dark Horse series this year.
At this
year's Eisner Awards, Chabon gave the keynote speech. As
you might expect, it was brilliant and impassioned. And
it has struck a chord.
A reader
pointed out to me that Comic-Con has posted the text of
that speech on their website, and because Chabon makes such
an important point, I agree with that reader that if you
haven't read it already, you should now follow this
link to Michael Chabon's keynote speech.
