Chair Shots
Dear Loyal Readers,
The column Chairshots that
you are reading right now began on 8/30/00 on DailyRadar.com. Fanboyplanet.com
Co-Editor Derek McCaw was asked by his editor at the time, Chris Bushnell,
if he knew anyone that was a "wrestling wonk" and could submit a weekly
behind the scenes column with a sarcastic tone. Derek pointed Chris
to me and soon thereafter Chairshots was born.
At the time WWF, ECW and
WCW had weekly shows and commentating on the inring and backstage escapades
was easy. There was actually far too much news to only write the column
once a week, but that was all Daily Radar would pay me to do.
I wrote the column for the
better part of a year, until one day Daily Radar closed their doors
and laid everyone off.
Left without a forum to
express my views on wrestling, Derek and I hatched the idea of starting
our own website. After a few months of struggling to get GayBoyArena.org
over as a brand name, we folded it and started FanboyPlanet.com. Chairshots
was reborn and blossomed into the tri-weekly column I'd always imagined
it should have been. Finally, my opinions on everything from Al Snow
to William Regal were cruising along the information highway. Surely
the free porn and liquor could not be far behind.
Unfortunately, wrestling
itself began to go into a dark period. ECW went bankrupt, WCW was purchased
by the WWF and my free porn never arrived. Over the last 18 months the
quality of the product WWE is selling has greatly decreased. There are
no more "classic" feuds or compelling storylines. Talent is wasted and
fans are left unsatisfied by, at best, childish scripting.
As the quality has dropped,
so has my enjoyment of writing this column. So it is with sad news that
I inform my readers that as of today, I will no longer be writing Chairshots
on a regular basis. There are a million different excuses I've come
up with, but the only one that matters is that writing this column has
ceased to be fun. I still enjoy wrestling but, for now, not enough to
warrant the effort that I put into this column.
There is good news however.
With my newfound free time, I'll be able to work on other projects for
FanboyPlanet.com. There does remain the possibility of me returning
to Chairshots in the future. For now, I think I just need to sit back
and be a fan of wrestling rather than a critic. Lastly, FanboyPlanet.com
will still continue to cover wresting on a weekly basis. Chris Garcia
will start a brand new column this Friday, "Falls Count Anywhere," and
I hope you take the time to read it, as I will.
Before I sign off, I do
want to thank a few people, because that's what all pretentious people
do on their farewell address. None of this would have been possible
without Derek McCaw. He's a great friend and a patient Co-Editor. Also,
I'd like to thank Chris Bushnell for getting me started on all this
in the first place. Thank you very much for the checks. I'm still not
sure what a "wonk" is, but I take it as the highest of compliments.
