Sensational Sherri Passes Away
06-15-07
One
of the most charismatic women in the history of wrestling
passed away today. Sensational Sherri Martel (Sherri Russell
I think her real name was) was a great woman’s wrestler
in the 1980s. She was the AWA’s woman champion who
later jumped to the WWF and won the woman’s championship
there. She had some great matches with all sorts of people,
including Velvet McIntyre and Debbie Combs. She was also
a part of one of the best Women’s matches the WWE
ever put on when she teamed with The Glamour Girls, Dawn
Marie and Donna Christanello, against Moolah, Velvet, Rockin’
Robin and the Jumping Bomb Angels. She lost her belt in
Paris to Robin.
She
was a very charismatic wrestler, but became a manager, first
for The Honky Tonk Man as Peggy Sue and later full-time
for Randy Savage. She won the Wrestling Observer Newsletter’s
Manager of the Year for that.
She
eventually ended up with Shawn Michaels after the Rockers
broke up. It was her voice that sang the original Sexy Boy
song that Michaels later redubbed. You can still hear her
background vocals. She left the WWF in 1993 and went to
WCW where she managed Harlem Heat as Sister Sherri. She
was very good in the role, too. She feuded with Col. Rob
Parker also. She would return later and wrestle Medusa.
She was used
a few times by the WWE in recent years as parts of pushes
for Kurt Angle and others. She looked good at 49 when she
was shown on TV earlier this year. She had already been
installed in the WWE Hall of Fame and is one of the few
modern American women wrestlers I suspect will get any votes
for the WON Hall of Fame.
