Welcome to Falls Count Anywhere! My name
is Chris and This is a Bad Week
This week has seen three deaths of stars
of the last decade. One was a WWE star who came close but
never quite made it. Another was in the WWE but was far
better-known for his work in the Regional territories of
the late 80s and early 90s. The last one was a Mexican worker
who came to the US a few times, but was really a big deal
mostly in Mexico.
Andrew
Martin worked as Test, initially a roadie character after
being introduced through Motley Crue. He managed to become
something of a big deal when he had a feud with HHH over
the affections of Stephanie McMahon. That launched him to
the point where he was incredibly over, leading up to an
in-ring wedding that HHH interrupted by showing a video
of him marrying Steph at a Vegas drive-thru chapel. It was
a big angle and it got over huge.
Sadly, as often happens to those who are
a part of a major angle with HHH, he was pretty much buried
the rest of the way and he kinda had to start from nothing
again. He was put into a tag team with Albert as T&A,
managed by Trish Stratus. I think that was the introduction
of Trish to the WWF and it didn't last long. At this point,
Test wasn't much of a worker, but he had some moments, including
a fine match with Shane McMahon.
He dated
Stacy Kiebler, though I think they broke up right before
she became a major star with her run on Dancing with
the Stars. He more recently dated Kelly Kelly. They'd
broken up not too long ago.
Test
was in TNA and made a comeback when they started ECW. He
had size and a great look. He was also always worried about
being one of the casualties of the business like Eddie and
Chris. He saved his money and even went through rehab. They
found steroids and other drugs in his house.
Steve
Doll was a major star in Oregon. From 1987 through about
1991, Doll won a bunch of titles, including the Pacific
Northwest Heavyweight Title and the Tag Team Titles 18 times!
That's a big deal. He ended up working in USWA in Memphis,
where he was the last USWA Southern Heavyweight Champion.
He was a part of Well Dunn, a more-or-less
jobber tag team in the WWF in the early to mid-1990s. They
didn't stick around long, but they had some good matches.
I seem to remember them working for Smokey Mountain and
feuding with The Rock 'n Roll Express, but I might be confused.
Sadly, he had an intestinal blockage a few
years ago, had to be put on life-support and they finally
removed him last week. We was only 45.
At the age of 37, Andrés Alejandro
Palomeque González passed away after freaking out
on a bus ride. He was found in a river, floating face down.
He had his issues with drugs and was likely a steroids user,
but he was also an important part of Mexican wrestling.
He was Winners, a dancing male gigolo sort of gimmick which
he did well. He was a frequent partner of Rey Mysterio Jr.
and Sr. and had some great matches with the likes of Psicosis
and Super Calo. He lost his mask to Calo, but would then
appear as Abismo Negro. That was a bigger gimmick than Winners
and would last for nearly a decade.
As Winners, he appeared in some WCW matches,
and I think for ECW at least once. As Abismo Negro, he was
in the WWF when they were serious about the Light Heavyweight
Championship and were bringing in Mexicans for SuperAstros.
He later worked as a part of Team Mexico for the World X
Cup for TNA. That was the last time I saw him work.
A sad week, that's for sure.
