Bam
Bam Bigelow Passes...
01-19-07
Sadly, another
of the legends of the 1980s passed away today. The great Bam
Bam Bigelow died this morning.
There aren’t a lot
of folks who can claim to be such a distinct character as
Bam Bam. His head full of tattoos, his flying around the
ring considering he was well-beyond 350 pounds. The guy
was a monster heel in Japan, right on par with his occasional
partner Big Van Vader, and he was a good heel in the US,
too, starting in the World Class territory in Texas.
His
style mixed with his appearance made him very popular with
kids in the period between 1987 and the mid-1990s. He also
appeared with WCW and had a good run with ECW where his
feud with Taz is well-remembered because of the match where
Bam Bam fell backwards and the two of them went through
the ring. It was one of the greatest finishes that Paul
Heyman ever devised.
He had
big runs against everyone from Hulk Hogan to the Von Erichs.
He was the star of the Survivor Series match in 1987 when
he eliminated three guys while teaming with Hulk. He finally
was eliminated by Andre the Giant, but that made him a star.
He is also headlined the 1995 WrestleMania against Lawrence
Taylor in a match that he generaled and turned out to be
one fo the best celebrity matches of all-time.
Bam
Bam was 45, had numberous health problems, including a motorcycle
accident that almost killed him. He had drug problems, mostly
prescriptions due to his injuries.
